Storm Clouds over Miami by scorpion016 Storm Clouds over Miami by scorpion016
Join me in my new project, where I apply my earliest digital style -Five Foliages- to some of my favorite trees. (Also some inspiration from Leonid Afremov

This piece took an interesting turn after I finished my first draft.  It changed from a simple peaceful, palm tree scene to a stormy atmosphere as I worked on the background coloring.  I really like the result, although if I could do it again, I would give more attention to the palm trees.

Some Others:
Majestic Maple, Towering Pine, Oak in Fields of Lavender, Sunset at Cherry Lake, The Lonely Willow

Prints now available!

What a nice picture in fact! Very good job indeed. Very impressive. What a nice style you are going for.
It reminds me of something very nice... maybe something like... romance? Or maybe even... passion? Or maybe even.... the truth?
Perhaps this is what a blind man sees when he is wearing his glasses....
Anyways, I feel like France would appreciate this. It would be. I think so. I definitely think so. I think it's worth the time.

Very nice job. Very nice job indeed--artist. Do you like the ocean? I think the ocean would love this picture as well--the fish... the barnacles... the shore.. it honestly probably would love this picture. :)
I love this picture too. I honestly give a damn. It's very euphoric and amazing and also it's quite NICE.
It looks like SACREMENTOUS!

What is Sacrementous, you may ask? Well, it's all about being happy, honestly! It's a very very beautiful idea that is sooo nice and soooo cool and so BENIGN and honestly it's just the most HATEFUL and EVILEST thing without 1 thing: YOU. 8)
I want you to know that the ocean is a good place to think of things like the future... the past... the present... your lover... your spouse... maybe even your sister... or even your problems.... I want you to know that the ocean is probably a reality that is adjacent to the epitome of epicness! It's absolutely the most GORGEOUS and LOVING and DEVOTED thing you have ever seen--
Might I say that this is beautiful but I think that it's the one. I think that the ocean is it. I think it was what the books told. :D

Back to this picture: I guess what you should do is probably hang this up.

Very well done!

Haha, I love your comment!  It is a piece of art in itself ;P

I really appreciate all of the compliments, even the off-topic digressions.  One day when I have my own house, I will definitely hang this one up in a gallery with the others!  Maybe I will buy a house by the ocean! :D

This is my critique;

This Five Foliages style looks promising. I can totally see myself using this as a background for my laptop or something like that. What I love the most about this is the colors. All the colors in this thing really pop and come at you. This makes the piece, in my mind, very nice and interesting to look at, despite it's unusual appearance. My favorite of your color choices has to be the red, orange, yellow, and green on the trees, which make it unique to the background, being made up of mostly cool colors. Speaking of which, I love the light blues and the little pieces of fluorescent pink you put into the painting too. Overall, I think this is a great piece, but for many people, I think that it might take some getting used to because of the unusual style. In fact, after getting a better look at it, I want to favorite it. My only concern is, it's kind of hard to tell where the storm is coming from, or even where it is. There's some darkness here and there, but I think you can make that a little clearer. Other than that, I love it, and keep up the good work.

Hello again,

it seems that you are progressively going for a wilder ambience. Well, at least now it's more uniformly chaotic instead of having calm spots, leading to a more even spread of colours and not to vast areas of calmness contrasting the main focus of the image. My guess is that that's also part of the reason why I can recognise the palm trees instantly. The main reason for that, of course, is that there is a nice contrast between the foreground and the background. It's also somewhat less unusual - thermographic imaging might also have a similar use of colours. And also, this time the red is more dominant on the foreground objects, with a greenish-blueish background. This is important, because that's a colour combination that plays an important role in depth perception. Red objects appear closer than blue or green objects.

That's why I have another problem with the colours this time. The part that confuses me most with what I can understand from the technique is the rose colours in the sky. I don't know if there's another colour you could have added to make it just as chaotic, but it blends too much with the foreground colours. But there has been significant improvement with a motive that seems as complex as the towering pine.

Once again I'd love to see what the initial image was like.

Thanks for all of that feedback!  The chaotic colors are just me having fun, without much thought as to what should go where, which is a weakness of mine.  But your input about the use of colors is really interesting, I didn't know that much about color theory.  Thanks again for taking the time to teach me a little!  I do see what you mean with the rose colors in the sky, they seem to pull the sky down into the level of the trees. My bad.

Impressive technique! The palm trees come through clearly but I'm not so sure of the storm clouds - suppose the darker purples represent the storm clouds? Overall I'd like to suggest trying out this great technique with a more simplified colour palette. As it is now the sky comes across as a little overwhelming because it is jam-packed with colour (but I guess this could be indicative of the storm?). It seems like both the palm trees and the background is competing for the viewer's attention - that's why perhaps simplifying or lessening the amount of colour in the background could create a better balance. Just a suggestion though. Keep up the great work!

The crazy colors in the sky were supposed to make conflict and tension in the sky, making it look like a storm was brewing.  But it doesn't seem like anyone got that out of it so I guess it wasn't very convincing.  That is a good suggestion, and it seems to be in agreement with what others are saying, so I will take it to heart!  Thanks so much for the input!
